A scrambled Rubik's Cube on a dark wooden surface

Almost every beginner hits the same handful of problems. Recognising them early saves a lot of frustration.

Ignoring the centre pieces

Centres are fixed. If you try to move a white edge to a face whose centre is not white, the cube will fight you the whole way. Always orient yourself using the centres.

Solving one face instead of one layer

A face that looks solid white can still have side colours in the wrong place. The first stage is a complete layer, not a single coloured face.

Rushing the algorithms

  • Turning too fast and losing track of the sequence.
  • Holding the cube in a different orientation halfway through.
  • Skipping the setup move before an algorithm.

Giving up mid-solve

A scrambled-again cube teaches you nothing. If a stage breaks, re-read it slowly, or scan the cube into a solver and follow the suggested path from where you actually are.
