A sticky, catching cube makes every solve harder than it needs to be. Ten minutes of maintenance can make an old cube feel close to new.
Clean out the dust
Pop out one edge piece and disassemble the cube carefully, keeping track of the core. Wipe each piece with a dry cloth. Avoid soaking pieces in water — moisture trapped inside causes squeaking later.
Apply lubricant sparingly
- Use a silicone lubricant made for puzzles, not household oil.
- A few drops inside the cube is enough — over-lubricating makes it sluggish.
- Turn every face 20-30 times to spread it evenly.
Set the tension
Loosen the screws slightly for easier cutting of corners, tighten them if the cube pops during fast turns. Adjust one quarter turn at a time and test after each change.
When to replace instead
Worn stickers, cracked internals or a warped core cannot be fixed by lubrication. If pieces pop out during normal solving, the cube has reached the end of its life.
